Methyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate (Methyl Triflate )Methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, also commonly called
methyl triflate and abbreviated MeOTf, is the organic compound with the formula CF3SO2OCH3. It is a colorless
liquid that can be used in organic chemistry to act as a chemical methylating agent. It is closely related to
the methyl fluorosulfonate (FSO2OCH3). While there is yet to be an official report of human death, several cases
have been reported with Fluorosulfonate methyl (LC50 (rat 1 hour) 5 ppm) and methyl triflate, it is believed to
have similar toxic effects based on the evidence available.Methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate is a strong methylating reagent, commonly used for the pre-methylation of
polysaccharides under mild basic conditions.Methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate can be used as a methylation reagent:
- In the identification of zerovalent sulfur, polysulfides in water wells containing sulfide and polysulfide species within the electrolyte of lithium-sulfur batteries by chromatography-based methods.
- In a reaction that involves potassium enolates.
- for the conversion of triflates of amines to methyl.
