Benzyl Chloromethyl Ether

Chloroalkylethers are a group of organic compounds that have an overall structure R-O-(CH2)n-Cl which is described as an ether that is connected to a chloromethyl group by the alkane chain.

Chloromethyl methyl ether (CMME) is an ether that has the formula CH3OCH2Cl. It is employed as an alkylating agent, an industrial solvent for the production of dodecyl benzyl chloride and water repellents, Ion-exchange polymers, resins, and also as a chloromethylation reagent. It is a well-known carcinogen of the human body. In organic synthesis, this substance is used for the introduction of the methoxymethyl (MOM) protective group.

Closely related industrial compounds of significance include bis(chloromethyl) the ether (BCME) (closely related to sulfur mustard, a chemical weapon), and benzyl chloromethyl ether (BOMCl).
